Caribbean Islands

The Caribbean is a group of islands located in the Caribbean Sea, just east of North America. These tropical islands are known by holidaymakers around the world as quite simply paradise.  They are recognized for the most gorgeous sandy beaches with clear blue waters, fantastic resorts, and their chilled laid-back lifestyle. The Caribbean has an ambiance that cannot be found anywhere else, making it the perfect destination for getting married, honeymooning, family vacations or just a getaway.

This archipelago comprises of over 7000 islands, deciding which of the 30 inhabited islands you want to visit can be an overwhelming task. Though they are similar generally, each island has its own unique characteristics. This article would highlight three of the unique islands in the Caribbean that are worth visiting.

There are many things that make the 40-island chain of Turks and Caicos the ideal place to vacation, but the main tourist attraction is their beaches. They have been rated consistently as the best beach vacation destination in the world. Their stunning, pristine beaches with soft white sand and aquamarine water are a beach vacationer’s dream. There is always something exciting to do or discover, whether you fancy some snorkeling, windsurfing, parasailing, paddleboarding, surf fishing or just boat cruising. They have the finest diving and snorkeling sites in the Caribbean, with their barrier reef being the third-largest in the world.  With its proximity to North America, a flight from New York is just 2 hours 36 minutes and from Miami 1 hour 9 minutes. There are also direct flights from Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, Toronto and London.

Trinidad and Tobago are twin islands and are found in the southern Caribbean. Trinidad is the larger and livelier of the two, with stunning colonial-style architecture, tropical rainforests, and extraordinary wildlife, while Tobago is quiet and known more for its exceptional diving, its verdant mountains, waterfalls, and variety of impeccable beaches. While travelers visit for various reasons, most return annually to the islands in February for their Carnival, described by many as ‘the greatest show on earth’. Trinidad and Tobago’s carnival is the heart and soul of Caribbean carnivals, as this is where steel pan, calypso, and soca was created. It features a number of street parties and parades that showcases the celebration of life, the most colorful, vibrant display of culture you would ever experience. The pulse and rhythm of the soca and calypso beats usually have many moving their feet and gyrating their waist. Be prepared to be mesmerized by the display of artistic and dazzling costumes. There is an endless number of events to keep you truly entertained during Carnival season such as soca and calypso competitions, parties, J’ouvert and competition of bands individuals and floats. Visitors also get a chance to partake in all the local cuisine and as a country with many diverse cultures, it is truly a culinary experience.

Saba, known as the “the unspoilt queen of the Caribbean” is one of the Caribbean’s hidden gems. A municipality of Netherlands, the island is five square miles of charm and natural beauty. It is well known for its hiking and diving as over the years it has gained popularity with ardent hikers and divers around the world. There are around twelve trails on the island that are suitable for every hiker as they range from moderate to extreme, taking you through rainforest, cloud forest, and tidal pools.  Hike through the lush forest to the top of the famed 2, 910 feet Mount Scenery and you would be rewarded with the most astonishing panoramic views. Saba is also aptly known to scuba diving enthusiasts internationally as a diver’s paradise. The island’s perimeter is protected by a national marine park, so there is a huge assortment of brilliant marine life and healthy reefs. Divers have around 30 fascinating dive sites to explore where they can witness reef sharks, stingrays, hawksbill turtles, dolphins and humpback whales in their habitat. It has three world-class diving centers and a freediving school.  To visit Saba fly to St Maarten’s Princess Julianna International airport and a 12-minute flight would get you there.

If you have never visited any of the island paradises in the Caribbean. You would not regret making it your next holiday destination. Regardless if you choose any of the islands mentioned above or another island of your choice, you are sure to make memories that will last a lifetime.

Preparing For Your St. Thomas Vacation

Each year, a large number of families and couples make the decision to vacation in St. Thomas.  If you are interested in traveling to St. Thomas also, there are a number of steps that you should do to prepare for your trip.

Many travelers mistakenly believe that vacation preparation begins a week or two before their vacation. If you are interested in traveling to the Caribbean or overseas, you will need to start planning your vacation well in advance.  This planning often includes obtaining a passport.  Passports can easily be obtained; however, they may take some time to process. Requesting a passport months before your vacation to St. Thomas is the best way to ensure that you will have it on time.

In addition to a passport, you will need other forms of identification.  A driver’s license is the best thing to bring along.  If you do not have a driver’s license another form of identification with your picture on it should be good enough.  Before leaving on our vacation, you may want to consider making copies of all of your important documents.  These copies may come in handy if you happen to lose or misplace the originals.

Most travelers stay at least a week in St. Thomas, therefore you will need to make sure that someone will be able to watch over your home or your pets if you have any.  This person can be a close friend, family member, co-worker, or neighbor. It is important that you leave them detailed instructions on how to care for your pets.  If you do not need anyone to watch over your home, you will want to place your mail on hold.  This can easily be done by visiting your local post office.

When you know exactly what time you will be leaving and where you will be staying, you are urged to let a friend or family member know.  If you have developed an itinerary for your vacation, you should give a copy to them.  In the event that something goes wrong back home, you will be able to be reached in a short period of time.

Once you have made the above-mentioned plans, you can begin to start packing for your vacation.  When packing, it is encouraged that you leave valuable items at home. Many times, if you lose or misplace some of your belongings, you will be the one who will have to pay for replacements.  It is also advised that you properly tag your entire luggage with your name and contact information.  Should your luggage get lost in the air or on the ground, an identification tag may come in handy.

When vacationing in St. Thomas, it is likely that you will bring along spending money with you.  You are advised to not carry large sums of money.  If you must bring cash with you, you are encouraged to divide your money into smaller amounts.  Storing your cash in multiple locations will prevent you from being without funds in the event that your money gets lost or stolen.  Instead of carrying large amounts of cash, you may want to consider credit and debit cards.

When traveling around St. Thomas, you are advised against bringing a purse along with you.  Purses and large wallets are sometimes targets for thieves.  Instead of carrying a purse or a wallet you may want to consider a money pouch.  Money pouches that tuck right into your shirt can be purchased from most dollar stores in the US. This small purchase makes it difficult or impossible for you to lose your money or have it stolen.

If you use some of the tips stated above they can help you in planning properly for your St. Thomas vacation. St. Thomas is located in the beautiful Caribbean, should anything go wrong you are most likely far away from home. Taking the time to fully prepare for your vacation is the best way to make sure that nothing goes wrong.
