If you need to travel to a place that has a history of kidnappings or terrorist attacks. Here is a list of things you should always do:

Before you Travel

Visit the U.S. State Department website for any risk advisories and register your trip.

Research about what is happening politically and socially in the area you are traveling to.

Give someone you trust a detailed itinerary of your travel plans and a copy of your passport.

Discuss with your family, what they should do if there is an emergency.

Put your affairs in order.


During your Trip

Avoid discussing your travel arrangements or anything personal.

Do not leave any personal or business items in your hotel room.

Be very vigilant about your surroundings, and make sure no one is tracking your movements.

If you observe any suspicious behavior report it to the police or US Embassy.

Take note of where police stations, hospitals, and hotels are located.
