US Vacation Requirements
Traveling to the United States for a vacation remains an exciting prospect, but the entry landscape has shifted significantly as of 2026. Whether it’s new security proclamations or the complete removal of pandemic-era hurdles, here is the updated guide for your trip.
🛂 Core Documentation
Passport
Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
Six-Month Club: Many countries are exempt from the "six-month rule" and only require a passport valid for the duration of the stay. Check the official CBP list to see if yours is included.
E-Passport: If you are traveling via the Visa Waiver Program, your passport must be an electronic passport (e-passport) with a digital chip.
Visa or ESTA
The way you enter depends heavily on your nationality and recent security updates:
ESTA (Visa Waiver Program): Citizens of 42 countries (including recently added nations like Qatar and Israel) can apply for an ESTA. It is valid for two years and allows stays of up to 90 days. The fee is now approximately $21 USD.
B-2 Visitor Visa: If you are not from a VWP country, you must apply for a B-2 visa. Note that as of January 2026, the application fee is $185 USD, and wait times for interviews at some consulates remain significant.
Travel Restrictions: As of January 1, 2026, new presidential proclamations have placed full or partial entry restrictions on nationals from roughly 40 countries due to updated security vetting standards. Always check the latest State Department advisories before booking.
✈️ Entry Logistics
Return Ticket & Financial Proof
A round-trip or onward ticket is mandatory. Additionally, CBP officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds (bank statements or credit cards) to ensure you can support yourself without seeking unauthorized employment.
Customs & Digital Declarations
Mobile Passport Control (MPC): You can now bypass long lines at many major US airports by using the official CBP MPC app. You submit your customs declaration digitally upon arrival.
The $10,000 Rule: You may bring any amount of currency, but any total (including cash, traveler's checks, or money orders) exceeding $10,000 must be declared.
Device Searches: Be aware that CBP officers have the legal authority to search digital devices (phones/laptops) at the border.
🏥 Health & COVID-19
COVID-19 Requirements (Rescinded)
Good news: All COVID-19 travel restrictions have been lifted. As of 2026, you do not need to show proof of vaccination, a negative test result, or undergo quarantine to enter the United States.
Health Insurance
While not legally required for entry, medical insurance is essential. The US healthcare system is private and exceptionally expensive; a single ER visit can cost thousands of dollars. Ensure your policy covers "international travel" and "medical evacuation."
⚽ Special Note: World Cup 2026
If you are visiting during June or July 2026, the US is co-hosting the FIFA World Cup. Expect heightened security, longer wait times at ports of entry, and specialized "World Cup" visa processing lanes at certain consulates for ticket holders.
